CMR and e-CMR: what every haulier needs to know
The CMR is the consignment note used in international road freight — the document that accompanies the goods from sender to consignee. e-CMR is its electronic version, with the same legal value but without paper. Below you'll see what every haulier needs to know about CMR and e-CMR and how to manage proof of delivery (POD).
What the CMR is (short answer)
- The CMR consignment note is the carriage contract between sender, carrier and consignee for a shipment.
- It contains the parties' details, the goods description, the loading and unloading place and the carriage instructions.
- On delivery, the consignee signs the CMR — the signature becomes the proof of delivery (POD).
- e-CMR is the digitally signed electronic version, with the same legal value under the additional protocol to the CMR Convention.
What e-CMR brings over paper
- Proof of delivery (POD) reaches the dispatcher seconds after signing, not days later with the truck.
- No more lost or smudged paper copies; everything is archived digitally.
- Invoicing the trip starts as soon as the POD arrives, so you get paid faster.
- e-CMR data links to the trip, vehicle and driver, so you have full traceability.
Table: paper CMR vs. e-CMR
Paper CMR vs. electronic e-CMR
| Criterion | Paper CMR | e-CMR |
|---|---|---|
| POD arrival | With the truck, days later | Instant, after signing |
| Loss and damage | Lost or illegible copies | Digital archive, no losses |
| Link to the trip | Manual, via the trip number | Automatic, tied to vehicle and driver |
Common mistakes
- Filling in the goods or party details incorrectly — the CMR becomes contestable at delivery.
- Not archiving the signed POD, so you cannot prove delivery in a dispute.
- Treating e-CMR as a plain PDF, with no real signature and traceability.
How 4transports helps
- You keep the register of CMR notes linked to trips, with each trip's cargo and weight.
- 4transports does not issue e-CMRs or collect signatures or POD; you mark the trip delivered with the delivery date.
- Delivered trips are invoiced through 4invoices, from the 4b2b ecosystem.
