How much does the road tax cost for trucks and how big is the fine?
The rovinieta is the charge for using the Romanian national road network. For trucks the tariff grows with the mass and the number of axles, and the fine for not having one is among the largest in road law. Below are the figures.
Short answer
- The road tax is mandatory for any registered vehicle using national roads in Romania.
- The tariff is set by category, based on the maximum authorised mass and the number of axles.
- For the category of vehicles over 12 tonnes with at least 4 axles, the annual tariff is about 1,425 euro.
- The fine for a missing road tax on a truck over 12 tonnes is in the range of 14,250 to 28,500 lei.
- If you forgot the road tax, you may pay it for the day you drove until the end of the next day, with no fine.
What the law says (in brief)
- The road tax is governed by Ordinance 15/2002, as amended, which sets the tariffs and sanctions by category.
- It can be bought for one day, 7 days, 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or one year.
- The road tax is linked to the registration number, not to the driver or the carrier.
- Paying the fine within 15 calendar days of notification allows payment of half the minimum.
- The toll for the Danube bridges is paid separately from the road tax.
Practical example
Example: a fleet of 6 trucks over 12 tonnes pays about 8,550 euro a year in road tax alone, that is over 40,000 lei. A single truck caught without it can bring a fine as large as the annual road tax of two vehicles. An alert 7 days before expiry costs nothing and removes the risk.
Common mistakes
- Buying the road tax for the wrong category compared to the maximum authorised mass in the vehicle documents.
- Forgetting the road tax on a vehicle brought back into the fleet after a period of standstill.
- Not including the road tax and the bridge toll in the trip cost per kilometre.
- Assuming the Romanian road tax also covers tolls abroad; each country has its own system.
How 4transports helps
- You can note the road tax deadline on each vehicle, next to the inspection and insurance expiry.
- The vehicle status (available, on a trip, in service) shows which trucks are actually in operation.
- 4transports does not add road charges to the trip cost automatically and does not send alerts.
